THE TOWN OF SLAVGOROD

The name Slavgorod means «The Town of Glory». And very few people remember that before World War II it was called Propoysk, which means «The Town of Drunkards». The legend says that after a very severe battle in Propoysk, Stalin was supposed to sign an Order naming one of the Army divisions after ‘The Town of Drunkards’. Having read the name of the town, he decided it was not good enough for war heroes and renamed the town into The Town of Glory, Slavgorod, instead.

RADOMLYA — THE ANCIENT TOWN OF THE RADIMICHS

Today the place called Radomlya in Chausy District is an ordinary agricultural settlement, with modern houses and all the modern conveniences, though. Its appearance does not tell you much about the glamorous history of this area. But many years ago Radomlya was the capital of an ancient Slavic tribe of the Radimichs. Mogilev archeologists claim that people started to settle here as far as one thousand and a half years ago. The Radimichs appeared here approximately in the 9th century. It is highly probable that this area saw the forefather of the tribe — Radim. Sometime in the 10th century on the territory of modern Radomlya (and possibly the surrounding villages) there appeared a settlement, which was comparatively big.

This is a wonderful spring with a long and rich history. It has been known since the 16th century, when both the spring and the village of Polykovichy belonged to a Mogilev noble man Stepan Kezgailo. The time passed, the owners changed, but the spring giving revitalizing water to the local dwellers remained. It has always been the center of spiritual and cultural life of the near-by villages.

St. Nicholas Monastery was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List as one of the most precious monuments of Baroque architecture in Europe. This is a really interesting place and it will not leave anyone indifferent.

The memorial chapel and the monument were erected in the village of Lesnaya to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Russian victory over the Swedes in the Battle of Lesnaya in 1708.

This spring is located in the village of Riasno on the Verbovka River. The spring water is belied to be healing. A forest road will take you to the place where you will find the spring with its wonderful sparkling water which is cool even on hot summer days.

«The blue well» — this is what the unique spring, known today as The Blue Spring, used to be called in ancient times. It is worth saying that the old name is more precise. The spring looks like a blue well, vertical and very deep, about 150-200 meters deep, to be more exact.

This spring is the most interesting tourist attraction in Cherikov District. The spring is located in the wild forest, not far from the village of Norki. The atmosphere is very calm and peaceful here, and once you come, you don’t want to leave.

Not far away from the village of Gamarnya in Bykhov Dostrict, there is a place surrounded by a thick stand of fir-trees, where more than ten springs sparkle around with their crystal-clear water. This is a local tourist attraction, cascade of springs Zakharenka. The place was blessed and is well looked after, there is a small chapel. Religious ceremonies on special days take place here.

There are quite a few versions of the town’s name origin. The most popular one says, that the word combination used to mean «a place to hide», because it was a really good place for people to conceal themselves from enemies and natural disasters. This version is partially proven by the town’s geographical position and archeological findings. Archeologists say that on the territory of the modern town there were a few well-protected settlements long before the town itself was first mentioned in the chronicles.

You can reach this place of natural forces taking a few roads, and each of them has its own advantages and drawbacks. The first one goes from the village of Petukhovka near Antonovichy. It starts from the hanging bridge across the river Pronya. On the other bank just take the path in the meadows and it will lead you to the springs.

Ride your bike down the hill, turn and get to the village of Shaperovo in Chausy District.

Stone-tailor

Stone-tailor

This boulder is a real Stone-Giant. You can find this magic stone in the village of Rusinovka, Chausy District. Local legends say that it used to be located on the wood glade between two villages. In the evening people used to bring flax linen there and in the morning they found beautiful ready-made clothes on the stone. In Belarusian folklore such stones are called Stones-Tailors. Nowadays there are twelve other Stones-Tailors in Belarus, and the thirteenth can be found in Rusinovka. The stone will also impress you with its size — it is more than 3 meters long and wide, 1.5 meter high and weighs more than 24 tons.

Budino spring

Budino spring

This spring is located in the north of Chausy District near the village of Budino. It is considered special by all the local dwellers. The spring water seems to be boiling because it is throwing out the fountains of white fine sand. There are more than ten such ‘boiling points’ altogether, some of them are bigger in size, others are smaller, but the most powerful one is always in the center. Some years ago they used to form a cross, that is why the spring is considered a sacred place.
